About the position:

The Senior/Director Level Controller will work closely with the CFO, Executive Leadership Team, Audit Committee, and technology, operational and sales leaders to manage, enhance and evolve the accounting controls, end-to-end.  This pivotal role will oversee the company’s accounting functions, ensuring audit readiness, implementing effective accounting controls, and enhancing financial processes. The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast-paced environment, particularly within a Private Equity-backed organization, and will be instrumental in driving financial accuracy, operational efficiency and successful audit. 

This position combines technical expertise with strategic oversight to align accounting processes with company operations. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in building accounting processes from the ground-up, implementing both internal controls and an ERP across a tech-enabled business, and delivering fulsome and accurate financial data, with a passion for improving accounting and finance processes. 

Must be local to Chicago and be available to come into the River North office, as needed.    

Essential Functions:

  • Financial Oversight: 

    • Manage all aspects of accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, deferred revenue, payroll, cash reconciliations, and general ledger functions

    • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements

    • Prepare financial documents such as monthly financial statements and weekly/monthly cash forecasts, ideally automating as much of the generation process as possible

  • Audit Readiness: 

    • Develop and implement audit readiness programs and controls 

    • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and other financial reporting requirements

    • Prepare the company for external audits and work closely with auditors to facilitate seamless audit processes 

  • Accounting Controls: 

    • Design and maintain effective internal controls and policies to safeguard company assets and ensure data accuracy

    • Regularly assess and improve accounting processes to enhance operational efficiency (i.e. invoicing, collections, vendor and host payments, T&E, etc.) 

  • Cash Management: 

    • Oversee cash flow management and forecasting, ensuring that financial obligations are met and that funds are allocated efficiently

    • Develop strategies for cash utilization and investment to optimize financial resources 

  • Process Improvement: 

    • Lead initiatives to build robust accounting processes that support scalability and effectiveness 

    • Identify opportunities for process automation and optimization 

  • ERP Implementation: 

    • Collaborate with IT and stakeholders to implement and integrate an accounting ERP system that meets the needs of the organization

    • Train accounting staff on new systems and procedures to ensure smooth adoption

  • Team Leadership: 

    • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment 

    • Provide guidance on complex accounting issues and support professional development.

  • Strategic Partnership: 

    • Collaborate with senior leadership to provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making and business growth 

    • Advise on financial implications of business operations and strategic initiatives 

  • Investor Relations: 

    • Support communication with investors and private equity partners regarding financial performance and strategic initiatives

    • Prepare presentations and reports for board meetings and investor updates

Education & Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred

  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and metrics

  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems; advanced Excel skills required

  • Experience working in a private equity-backed environment is highly desirable 

  • 7+ years of progressive financial management experience, with a strong focus on accounting and reporting

Experience:

  • Experience in working with multiple legal entities under different legal umbrellas 

  • Experience with establishing internal controls, audit readiness and taking a company through an audit
